UHERO Annual Report Fiscal Year 2010
The past year has brought the beginnings of growth to the Hawaii economy and new opportunities for UHERO. We have undertaken important new research, we have acquired new key sources of financial support, and we have presented a new public face to the community.
An exciting development for us has been a new commitment from Bank of Hawaii to sponsor UHERO as lead supporter of the redesigned UHERO Data Portal. The site provides access to a wide array of economic and social indicators for the state and county economies. During the past fiscal year, UHERO researchers and staff worked to accomplish a complete overhaul of the UHERO data portal that includes significant improvements in functionality. The Bank’s three-year $120,000 commitment will allow for continued refinement of the site, while preserving free community access to this crucial data resource.
Along with the Data Portal, the past year has brought closure to a fully redesigned UHERO web site. (The site became live in the Fall 2010.) The new site features easier access to the array of UHERO reports and activities, while sporting a fresh, colorful new look.
UHERO Annual Report Fiscal Year 2009
The past year has been a challenging one for Hawai‘i. The deepest global downturn in a half-century plunged the local economy into a steep tourism-led recession. The construction sector also contracted after a decade of healthy expansion. The Hawai‘i economy saw widespread job losses, and falling State tax revenues created a fiscal crisis that continues to unfold.
UHERO was ready to respond to the economic crisis. During the fiscal year ending June 30, 2009, our economic forecasting project provided timely and effective analysis of the changing economic environment. UHERO researchers provided hundreds of hours of commentary to the press and presentations to civic groups and policymakers. In partnership with KITV news, Dr. Sumner La Croix launched a weekly “UHERO report,” which features a UHERO economist interpreting the latest local and national economic news and reporting on important research findings.
